31 July 2009 :  Parafix Annual Golf Day 2009

The week of our annual golf event challenged a number of our diaries, with events such as Hickstead, the Seniors Open at Sunningdale, the Friends Provident Final at Lords, just ahead of the TW20 quarter finals and Glorious Goodwood. The economic climate did affect the number of guests too, down this year to 36, who were nevertheless all very enthusiastic.

The summer rain kindly stopped after our traditional breakfast at the scheduled start time to allow the morning Texas Scramble teams to attempt to beat the long standing 5 under, 9 hole challenge. It had been equalled previously as it was this year by Captain Steve Barwick, Arek Majczak, Andy Small and Pete Hobson.

After lunch the same groups returned to the battle field, but this time the players were on their own, playing for themselves. The longest drive came from Big Dick Simpson, with nearest the pin being won by Greg Upcott.

As ever this competition threw up an administrative challenge. Just as we thought we had avoided the storms, with everybody out and returning on time, we found that 2 of our gladiators returned the same score of 37 Stableford points. The rules of golf on this situation are quite clear; in the event of a tie the last 9 holes are compared, then 6 then 3 then the last hole.

Therein however lay the problem; we had played off two tees in an attempt to get everybody back to the club house earlier for dinner and prize giving. The two winners with the best scores, Mick Buckman and David Sheppard, went off different starting tees which meant that they had different back 9 nines!

Never to be too concerned by mere facts it was declared a draw, both to hold the cup for 6 months and both to play at the famous Wentworth club with Mike Punter.

The hip flask was won, not as a result of his golfing prowess, but as a result of Marc Handy’s decision to stop coaching the ladies hockey team and move onto the men’s!

All in all it was a hugely successful day, and any Parafix customer interested in joining the group for next year’s challenge should please talk to their local contact.
